Making a difference at St John's Hill/Burridge Gardens.
The Resident Steering group
-
Resident involvement is at the heart of the regeneration and has been key to the success of St John's Hill. A 12-member Resident Steering Group was set up at the start of the project and continues to meet every two months. The group currently includes a mix of Peabody residents and residents from the wider Battersea community with no connections to Peabody.
The group were closely involved in the selection of the scheme architect and contractor for Phase 1. They also chose the names for the blocks (types of lavender), the images for the brick relief sculptures, and the outdoor gym equipment.
Public art
-
We commissioned Rodney Harris and Valda Jackson to design a series of external artworks in consultation with our residents.
Phase 1 shows the history of the site with reliefs, built into the brickwork. These sculptures represent memories, histories and occupations of residents past and present, including a porter's uniform tools and objects of domestic life and the clothing children wore in the early days of the estate.
Artist Rodney Harris consulted with the Residents Steering Group and local community at St John's Hill to design the Phase 2 artwork. This has resulted in objects reflecting a range of community aspects which will be incorporated onto the Community Centre building at the heart of the development.
Local labour, employment and suppliers
We provide community programmes for our residents and people living in the surrounding neighbourhoods. This includes employment and training support, health and wellbeing support, family support programmes and activities for younger and older people. We provide over 70,000 hours of free to access community activities each year. At St John’s Hill, we are working closely with our partners to create jobs and apprenticeships for the local community.
Our key targets include:
- A commitment to local labour. Our target is for 25% of those working on the project to be Wandsworth residents
- 25 work experience opportunities for adults and students
- 14 apprenticeship opportunities
- 2 graduate opportunities for Wandsworth residents
- Supporting the local economy by seeking nearby supply chain companies - providing long term, sustainable benefits
- Working with local schools and colleges to inspire young people to get interested in the construction industry.
Charity partners
We are pleased to announce Glass Door as our site charity partner for Phase 2. Glass Door is a charity who open their doors every night during winter months to welcome homeless men and women. The team will take part in fundraising activities and events to meet an initial donation target of £5,000.
Patrick Luong, Glass Door Corporate and Major Donors Manager, said: "We are delighted to be chosen as the site charity for the St John’s Hill regeneration project and impressed by the team’s compassion and commitment to making a difference and creating social value within the community. We can achieve so much more through collaboration and look forward to working together and moving forward to a future where no one has to sleep on the streets of London."
