The East End was badly affected by the Blitz, the German Luftwaffe's bombing raids on London and other cities during the Second World War.

On 8 September 1940 an air raid shelter on our Whitechapel estate in London E1 experienced a direct hit which tragically killed 78 people, including many women and children.

A commemorative memorial was placed on the estate in December 1995 and those who died are still remembered today by relatives and friends, some of whom have also left contributions on a Facebook page.

In total, two hundred Peabody residents and three members of staff were killed during the War.
