Help for those experiencing domestic abuse
Domestic abuse can happen to anyone. Here's how to find support.
Published: 03/06/2021
Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of sex, gender or sexuality. It's estimated that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime.
Domestic abuse includes a range of behaviours which can include physical abuse, coercive control, financial abuse, sexual abuse and psychological and emotional abuse.
In addition, LGBT+ people may also have their sexuality or gender identity used against them by the perpetrator. For example, a perpetrator may threaten to 'out' someone by disclosing information to friends or family members, they may isolate the person from sources of LGBT+ support or resources, or make them feel guilty or ashamed of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
