First stop Pembury, next Vogue!

Eight of our most creative and talented young girls living on the Pembury Estate in Hackney have been featured in this month's Vogue.

They were photographed by Misan Harriman who made history earlier this year for being the first black man to shoot a British Vogue cover in the magazine's 104-year run.

All of the girls are involved in Threads, a Pembury-based fashion and textiles project designed to help young girls develop creative skills. Threads offers a fun space for girls to learn new skills and grow their confidence in a welcoming and friendly environment.

The girls, including sisters Serena, 13, and Sam, 10, were photographed by Harriman as part of Save the Children’s 'Christmas Card Project' and annual 'Christmas Jumper Day'.

All of the girls created a Christmas card and handwrote messages inside with their reflections of 2020 as well as their hopes for the future.

Serena told Vogue that she wants doesn’t want to return to the old normal. Instead, she wants a new, kinder normal:
"Actually,  I don’t want to go back to normal. Things have changed. I think it’s going to be incredibly hard to go back to the way we used to all be. I think it’s best if we start a new normal, change the way we were before. We could stop crime, we could get homes for homeless people, we could get food to people who were poor. Like at school, we have a food bank.”
